People Choose Their Leaders
I often tell the story of a former manager from the early days of my career who made a very profound statement to me, which was “people choose their leaders.” As I moved up the ranks in my profession, what he said to me became more apparent. Within every team or organization, whether social or corporate, specific individuals exhibit leadership skills and abilities that people identify with and follow regardless of the person’s status or position.
Simple observation of group or team dynamics will quickly identify the chosen leader. There tends to be a magnetic pull that leads people to them. They are sought out for advice and their ability to address and resolve issues. Individuals who meet this example tend to be trusted and highly respected. These people are natural leaders. However, they may not realize they are exhibiting leadership skills. Their peers and other leaders in the organization recognize these abilities in them. They have it. These people are “emerging” leaders, worthy of development into managerial or leadership positions in many cases. When an organization recognizes individuals with these skills, it is well worth the investment to develop these people for leadership.
